Spring has sprung here in Charleston! Gorgeous, sunny days have arrived complete with a dazzling array of beautiful spring flowers. To celebrate the start of the season, we’ve compiled a go-to list of quintessential Southern blooms that are easy-to-grow and guaranteed to add beauty and color to your yard year-round. Enjoy!
1) Azaleas: We can’t think of a flower that is more Southern than the azalea. With its bright blooms covering the local landscape come spring, it’s the one plant you’ve got to have! You could go with the more traditional, Indica varieties which can dominate your yard and grow up to 8 feet high and wide or go with the popular hybrid, the Encore® azalea, which is a wonderful, multi-season blooming option.
2) Camellias: These are the perfect, no-fuss bush to add some winter interest to your garden. They come in a variety of colors and feature beautiful, glossy dark green evergreen leaves. It’s the one plant that you could neglect for years and it would still look great.
3) Cannas: Cannas are prolific growers and add a bright pop of color to your summer garden. The bright blooms atop lush, tropical foliage last well through the fall but do great in the hot summer months with minimal maintenance. Grow these stunners in any low spot in your yard since they love damp soil.
4) Daylilies: These rigorous garden staples are probably one of the hardiest plants out there. You’ll often see them growing well in polluted spots like highway medians. They come in a variety of stunning colors and also include some reblooming varieties like the classic Stella d’Oro which blooms from summer through fall in the traditional sunny yellow color or mauve-y purple.
Whatever your preference, you can’t go wrong with any of these choices in your Southern garden.
